Gazelle

- 1 day safari in Ngorongoro Crater

Description:

You will be picked up from the Outpost Lodge in Arusha at 6:00am by your friendly tour guide and you'll be driven to Ngorongoro Crater for a 5-6hrs crater tour where you will descend 2,000 feet into the giant caldera of this extinct Volcano and see a wide variety of wild animals up close and personal in their natural habitat.

This magnificent natural amphitheater contains the largest concentration of animals in all of Africa. Prides of lion, black rhino, elephant and many other animals share this land with the legendary Maasai tribesmen.

You will also be able to encounter many species of birds due to Ngorongoro's alkaline lakes. For lunch, we'll stop at the picnic site for you to eat and stretch your legs, then we'll slowly enjoy the game while on the way back to the hotel in Arusha.

Gazelles are known as swift animals and some are able to run at bursts as high as 60mph (97 km/h) or run at a sustained speed of 30mph (48 km/h).

They tend to live in herds and eat less coarse, easily digestible plants and leaves.

The Thomson's gazelle is around 60 to 80 cm (24 to 31 in) in height at the shoulder and is coloured brown and white with a distinguishing black stripe. The males have long, often curved, horns.

Like many other prey species, Tommies and Springboks (as they are familiarly called) exhibit a distinctive behaviour of stotting (running and jumping high before fleeing) when they are threatened by predators, such as cheetahs.
